Brief Description of Courses:

Criminal Justice:
Classes offered in the area of criminal justice encompass the entire range of the criminal justice field.  A student may focus on one particular area in the field of criminal justice that he finds is of interest to him.  Courses are offered in policing issues, the court system and corrections.  We have also recently developed a forensic science program which meets the needs of the growing interest in this field.

Psychology:
Psychology is defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.  The study of psychology is applicable to every area of study.  General psychology is almost universally required for a degree in any area of study.  In addition to general psychology, Mississippi Delta Community College offers courses in child psychology, adolescent psychology, and human growth and development.  It is the goal of the psychology instructors to encourage students to gain knowledge to their life's work, and to become critical thinkers concerning function.

 Sociology:
Sociology is the systematic study of human society and social interaction.  Sociology's subject matter is diverse, including topics such as urban and rural life, racial, and ethnic minorities, family patterns and relationships, education, social change, inter-group relations, social class, deviance, environment, technology and communications, health care and illness, social movements, and pressing contemporary social issues. Sociology attempts to address these issues and other complexities of everyday life by utilizing what is called the "sociological imagination"- the critical awareness of the social processes that shaped by surrounding cultural and social processes that shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures. Sociology can provide a rich fund of knowledge and many distinctive ways of looking at the world as to generate new ideas and assess old. Sociology enables us to appreciate viewpoints other than our own, to understand how these viewpoints came into being and in the process, to better understand ourselves, our attitudes and our own lives.

History
The Department of history offers a major leading to an Associates Arts Degree, and is designed to enhance a liberal arts education and assist preparing an elementary  and secondary education majors as well.  The Department of history offers the following courses: World Civ I (His 1163) & World Civ II (His 1173), US I (His 2213), US II(His2223), Survey of Afro-American History (HIS 1613)

 Education:
Education courses are very important at MDCC.  The College offers traditonal transfer courses and a number of accelerated programs to our students.  The future need for teachers in our state is well documented and means that the student interested in teaching has every prospect of securing immediate employment in the field of his choosing upon completion of his degree.  I encourage anyone interested in education to make an appoinment with our departmental advisers.

Geography:
World Regional Geography introduces students to different places around the world. Geogrpahy is a diverse discipline that encompasses a wide range of topics. The class focuses on different regions of the world, including topics on the physical, historical, political, econimic, and cultural geography of each region. Geography is not just knowing where a particular place is located on a map, but rather understanding how geographical events around the world affect us here in the Mississippi Delta.

English: – Communications is the most important social skill in today’s world. Our English instructors build on the foundation provided by high school to enhance the quality of the student’s language and lay the ground work for advanced classes. We are proud of our class ratios which provide the student with one – on –one assistance

Nutrition: – Is a study of nutrients required for normal growth applied to the selection of food for ingestion, metabolic process of digestion, assimilation and absorption
