Mississippi Delta Splits With Southwest

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans ran their record to 3-0 with a 75-72 overtime win over the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears at home Monday night in Moorhead while the Delta women fell to 1-2 overall with a 77-53 loss to the Lady Bears.

The Trojans fell behind by as much as four points in the early going of the first half but then made a run to take a four point lead of their own, 24-20, with 4:05 remaining. The Bears answered with a couple of three pointers to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the break.

Delta spent the first five minutes of the second half chipping away at that lead and with the aid of two three pointers by sophomore guard Darius Dukes and eight points, including a trey, by sophomore guard Tyrone McNeese pulled out to a seven point lead, 46-39, at the 12:50 mark. This was to be the biggest lead of the night by either team.

The Bears regained the lead at the nine minute mark and the Trojans tied the game five times in the final minutes but could not gain the upper hand. Southwest led by three points with 1:05 left in the game when sophomore guard Zarmarlus Griffin tied the game at 68-all with a three pointer. Both teams missed easy layups in the final minute that could have won the game.

Southwest controlled the first two-plus minutes of OT and pushed out to a four point lead with 2:26 remaining. Then, Dukes hit two free throws and McNeese tied the game on a fast break layup. A missed shot by the Bears and another fast break layup by McNeese put the Trojans up 74-72 with 38 seconds left in OT.

A mishandled ball and a steal led to a Joshua Madison free throw that put MDCC up by three points with seven second remaining. The Bears got the final shot and missed a three pointer that would have tied the game.

The Trojans had five players in double figures led by Zarmarlus Griffin and Darius Dukes (4-5 treys) with 16 points each. They were followed by Tyrone McNeese with 15 points, Travon Harper with 12 points and Ondarious Hamlin with 1 points and nine rebounds.

The Lady Trojans took their only lead, 6-5, on a bucket by McKinnon Skeen at the 15:02 mark in the first quarter. The Lady Bears then poured on the points and led by 19 at the 2:28 mark before closing out the first half with a 35-18 lead.

Things only got worse in the second half as the Southwest women pushed their lead to 30 points on six occasions before the game ended with a 24 point Lady Bears lead, 77-53.
