Mississippi Delta Drops Two To East Central

The Mississippi Delta Community College basketball teams suffered a sweep Saturday afternoon at home against East Central Community College with the Lady Trojans losing 96-75 and the Trojans falling 80-77 in OT.

The Lady Trojans held the score close in the first half going into the dressing room down by only seven points, 49-42. But, they just couldn’t contain sophomore guard Tashi-ana Thompson of Lithonia, GA, who poured in 28 points or sophomore forward Shakerya Morrison of Wendell, NC, who added 16 points. These two together scored 44 points.

The Lady Trojans were led by sophomore guard Aqueshia Kimble who scored 19 points and sophomore forward Niya Head who added 14. Freshman guards Rachel Harper and Eugenia Gilliam scored 11 points each in the effort.

The Lady Trojans also lost a close game Thursday night at Poplarville falling 60-57 to the Lady Wildcats of Pearl River Community College. Niya Head was the game’s high scorer with 14 points. She was followed in double figures by Kenya Arnold with 11 points.

In Saturday’s men’s game the Trojans trailed most of the first half and were down by 11 points, 41-30 at the break. But, Delta fought back in the second half, with a 13 point effort by freshman center Travon Harper and 11 points from sophomore guard Tyrone McNeese, to take a one point lead, 58-57, on the strength of a three-pointer by sophomore guard Zarmarlus Griffin.

The game was nip and tuck from there on in with neither team gaining more than a three point advantage. The Trojans held a 72-70 lead with 23 seconds remaining before the Wildcats tied the game with a bucket to send the contest into OT.

Delta’s Tyrone McNeese opened the OT scoring with a trey that was immediately answered by Pearl River who then took a two point lead with 3:09 remaining. Griffin tied the game at 77-all with 2:40 left and both teams missed shots until the Wildcats drained a trey with three seconds left in the game. A desperation shot from mid-court by the Trojans sailed wide.

Tyrone McNeese led the Trojans in scoring with 20 points while sophomore forward Ondarious Hamlin scored a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Zarmarlus Griffin and Travon Harper provided 11 points each.

In Thursday’s game at Poplarville the Trojans again came up short by three points, 60-57 after being down 33-27 at the break. Darius Dukes led Delta in scoring with 12 points and Travon Harper scored a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The losses drop the Lady Trojans overall record to 1-4 overall and the Trojans to 3-2 overall, all against South Division teams. Both teams will be back in action Monday night in Moorhead for games against Hinds Community College at 6 & 8 p.m.
