Mississippi Delta Splits With Northwest

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans picked up their second North Division win, against one loss, Thursday night handing the Northwest Community College Rangers a 78-66 loss while the Lady Trojans dropped an 82-72 decision to the Lady Rangers.

Freshman center Travon Harper went 6-11 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line to lead the Trojans with a game-high 15 points and nine rebounds. He was followed closely by sophomore guard Zarmarlus Griffin with 14 points. Sophomore guard Jaylen Ford added 11 points while sophomore guard Tyrone McNeese also scored in double figures with 10 points.

The Trojans never trailed in the game and led by 18 points, 32-14, with over five minutes remaining in the first half. The Rangers made a push in the opening minutes of the second stanza and were able to cut the lead to nine points, 50-41, at the 12 minute mark, but that’s as close as they would come as the Trojans ran their lead back to 17 with eight minutes remaining.

The win moves the Trojans to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in the North Division race and puts them one game behind division leaders Holmes and East Mississippi, both 3-0.

For the second game in a row, the Lady Trojans were leading their opponent with five minutes remaining in the game when things began to unravel. Delta was up by four points, 67-63, when the Lady Rangers suddenly caught fire, scoring 19 points and the Lady Trojans went cold, managing just five points in the final five minutes.

Freshman guard Rachel Harper paced the Delta ladies with a team-high 20 points (3-5 three-pointers) while sophomore forward Niya Head scored another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guards Mary Washington and Aqueshia Kimble (seven rebounds) added 11 points each. Freshman guard McKinnon Skeen also scored all her nine points on treys.

The loss drops the Lady Trojans to 3-10 overall and 0-3 in the North Division race. Both teams will be on the road next week as they travel to Goodman to play Holmes Community College Tuesday night and then go to Fulton to take on Itawamba Community College on Thursday.
