Lady Trojans get first victory on the hardwood

Get your brooms Trojan fans because your men’s and women’s basketball teams have pulled off their first sweep of the season.

Head Coach Burnadette McDonald and her Lady Trojans basketball team marked its first tally in the win column Thursday night by beating Pearl River CC 63-55 at J.T. Hall Coliseum in Moorhead, Miss.

MDCC won the opening tip and went on a 6-point scoring run before the Lady Wildcats were able to get a basket to fall.

The Lady Trojans would lead the entire first half and went to the break up 23-16. However, PRCC brought the heat in the second half and gained the lead for the first time with 2:21 left in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Wildcats would hold onto a 39-37 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

The second half of the game was filled with turnovers and fast breaks, but would play in the Lady Trojans favor at the end of the night.

Sophomore guard Racquel Harper was the lead scorer for MDCC with 22 points, 20 of those coming in the second half. Harper was 8 of 12 from the field and 6 of 6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore forward Kenya Arnold pulled down eight rebounds on the night. As a team, the Lady Trojans were 21 of 42 from the field and 18 of 25 from the stripe.

In the men’s contest, Head Coach Derek Fears and the Trojans (4-0) also got a victory. MDCC won the tip but couldn’t covert and quickly turned it over to the Wildcats.

But it didn’t take long for the Trojans to get on the board with a drive to the left side of the basket by sophomore point guard Anthony Mabon who dished it back out to sophomore forward Travon Harper who nailed the short jumper for two.

The entire first half of play consisted of back-and-forth scoring and several lead changes, but MDCC would head to the locker room ahead 41-30 over PRCC.

Fears’ squad led the entire second half and finished strong with a 79-69 win. Harper led the team in scoring for the third consecutive game with 17 making 4 of 5 from the field and 9 of 10 free throws.

He had help with sophomore’s Dantaveous Crawford and Octavius Stimage scoring 14 and 12 points respectfully. Both Crawford and Stimage were perfect from the stripe making 6 of 6 free throws. Sophomore forward Mark Johnson led the team in rebounds with nine.

Both teams travel to Utica Monday, Nov. 16 to take on Hinds Community College with action starting at 6 p.m. The next home game will be Thursday, Dec. 3 with the Lady Trojans and Trojans playing host to Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
