Mississippi Delta drops close games on the court

MOORHEAD – Both Mississippi Delta basketball teams fell to Northeast Mississippi CC Monday night in doubleheader action at J.T. Hall Coliseum.

For Coach Burnadette McDonald’s women’s team, it lost by a score of 65-49 to the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Trojans won the tip and held a short lead until 6:49 left in the first period. Northeast took control and carried the lead to halftime by a score of 32-20. Sophomore guard Racquel Harper led MDCC at the break with six points and one rebound.

Both teams played a competitive second half of basketball, but the Lady Trojans couldn’t pull off the comeback. Sophomore forward Kenya Arnold led MDCC in scoring with nine points and five rebounds. Harper totaled eight points and three rebounds on the night.

The Lady Trojans will travel to Scooba Thursday to battle against the Lady Lions of East Mississippi CC. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. They will return home Monday, Feb. 8 to compete against the Northwest Mississippi CC Lady Rangers.

Coach Derrick Fears’ men’s squad (10-8, 2-5) clashed against a very physical Northeast team from start to finish Monday night. At the half, the Tigers held a one-point lead (31-30), which they added to in the second half. The margin was small, but Northeast held on to beat MDCC 72-68.

Sophomore center Travon Harper led the Trojans in scoring with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Dantaveous Crawford had 14 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams travel to Scooba Thursday to battle against the Lions of East Mississippi CC. They will return home Monday, Feb. 8 to face Northwest Mississippi CC.
