Trojans edge out Wolves on the hardwood

Head Coach Derrick Fears and his MDCC Trojans (5-3) squeaked out a close 88-82 win over the Wolves of Co-Lin Monday night after a hard-fought game.
The Trojans relied on free throw shooting and getting balls to fall from three point range to outscore the Wolves. MDCC held a 12-point lead (42-30) at the break, but Co-Lin would not go away in the second half.

Freshman forward Darrian Wilson for the Wolves would sink several three pointers to spark a short-lived comeback for his team. MDCC drew several late fouls and took advantage of free throws to add to their lead and hold on for the win.

Sophomore guard Jabarie Escoffery and freshman guard Xa’Vavier Jones led the team in scoring with 22 a piece. Escoffery went 6-for-14 from the floor and went 7-for-9 from the stripe. Jones went 6-for-13 from the floor and went 6-for-8 from the free throw line and tallied six assists.

As a team, the Trojans shot 48 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free throw line. MDCC took advantage under the rim by scoring 16 points on put backs and scoring 30 from beyond the arc.

The Trojans travel to Summit Thursday to compete against Southwest Mississippi Community College. Monday was the final home game of the semester from MDCC.
