Trojans fall in hardwood nail biter

MOORHEAD – The Trojans (5-7, 0-1) opened division play at home Thursday night against the Bulldogs of Holmes Community College.

A valiant second half rally by the Trojans would make the game exciting for those in attendance, but it would not be enough for the win. Holmes defeated the Trojans 71-68 in the final seconds of the game.

The game was a back and forth physical one from start to finish. Holmes would lead the game until half way through the second half when MDCC started pushing back.

In the last five minutes of the game, the teams would tie the score four times. Sophomore guard Jabarie Escoffery would draw a foul and sink two freebies to put MDCC up 66-64 with 1:32 left in the contest.

But with 1:00 minute left, the Bulldogs answered the call by scoring two to tie it 66-66.

Mikkel Norment would go to the hoop, make the shot, draw the foul and head to the free throw line with under one minute to play. Normen’s basket on the foul and made free throw would inch the lead to 69-66.

MDCC would take the ball down the court and get the layup to fall to make it 69-68. Holmes would do the same on their end of the court to take the last lead of the night at 71-68 with under 15 seconds left in the contest.

The Trojans travel to Fulton Tuesday, Jan. 17 to face the Indians of Itawamba Community College. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
