Mississippi Delta Community College held a groundbreaking ceremony June 12 to celebrate the construction of the Moorhead, Miss., college’s new Vandiver Student Union. The new $4 million student center, named for the college’s first president, is slated to be completed by the fall of 2015.

“This new facility will provide a state-of-the-art union building for current and future students at MDCC,” says MDCC President Larry Nabors.

Designed by Beard & Riser Architects of Greenwood, Miss, the 11,600-square-foot student-centered facility, will feature lounge space, multipurpose conference room/meeting space, a suite of offices for the Office of Student Services, a food service grill, game room, restrooms and a fitness room.

The original Vandiver Student Union was demolished in 2011 and the campus has been without a dedicated a student center since.

Paula S. Sykes, chair of the MDCC board of trustees, says, “As a Board of Trustees, it is our vision that this building will be filled with opportunities for the enhancement of the quality of life for our students. Imagine the memories that will be created here as students learn, grow and interact with others. Students will learn, study, make friends, find job opportunities, create relationships that will follow them all through their adult life, and they may even meet their future wife or spouse in this very building.”

“The memories that will start here in this building are invaluable and life lasting. This building will be a show place to serve the entire six-county area of the Mississippi Delta Community College district for many years to come,” adds Sykes.

Designed to complement the existing campus architecture and open itself to the landscape for student gatherings, the new facility’s exterior design was influenced by existing campus buildings, with a muted palette of beige-colored brick, stucco and wood trim. Large gabled roof overhangs will provide deep porch areas to enhance student gathering and provide relief from the climate.

The project was funded by the Mississippi State Legislature through the passing of HB1701 in 2013. D. Carroll Construction, LLC, of Oxford, Mississippi was selected as the project contractor.
