Sam played tackle for the football team during the 1953 and 1954 seasons and ran track in 1954, throwing javelin and shot put. The Trojans only managed a 3-7-1 season during Latham’s freshman year, but a improved team turned that record around his sophomore year to go 7-3 and earn a trip to the Lions Bowl. Latham was a member of the “S” Club.

Sam Latham went on to play two years at Mississippi State University as a tackle for the Bulldogs and earned All-Southeastern Conference honors in 1957. He signed as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 1958.

Latham pursued a career in agriculture, working as the long-time General Manager of Hollandale Seed & Delinting Company. Latham is the Past President of the Mississippi Seedmen’s Association and a Director of Delta & Pine Land Company.
