Mary Switzer Thomas, Class of 1939

Induction Class of 2001
Track, Basketball, Tennis, & Cheer

Mary Thomas played every sport available to women at Sunflower Junior College. She served as Captain of the women’s basketball team her sophomore year and was high scorer as well. She was also an integral part of the track team running the 50 and 75-yard dashes and serving as a member of the relay team that finished in first place in the State Championships. In addition, she played doubles on the SJC tennis team and made it to the championship playoff one year.

The Inverness native was such an outstanding athlete that she was voted “Best Girl Athlete” her sophomore year and was also elected Football Queen the same year.

Mary Thomas went on to Delta Sate where she would have surely excelled in basketball had there been a team. Instead, she served as a senior cheerleader in 1941. She married fellow SJC student and track star Joe Thomas.

Mary taught school at Friars Point Consolidated School while her husband served as Coach and Superintendent of Friars Point High School. Mrs. Thomas taught school for 46 years.
