W.M. “Shug” Durham, Class of 1948

Football, Basketball, & Baseball

While at Sunflower Junior College, Durham was an all around athlete. He played football, basketball, and baseball in 1947 and 1948 and captained the football team in 1948 as quarterback after taking over the starting role from Jimmy Bellipanni after his car wreck.

Durham went on to play football for Delta State

The Friars Point native and accounting major coached for a year at Benoit before going into the farm implement business. He had dealerships in Clarksdale, Tunica, and Memphis.

Sugar Durham has constantly supported MDCC over the years. He served as a member of the college’s Board of Trustees from 1992 to 199 and helped to organize the Bolivar/Coahoma Chapter of the MDCC Alumni Association. More importantly, he has influenced a number of youngsters to attend MDCC over the years.

For his loyalty and support, Durham was named “Alumnus of the Year” for 1996-1997, by the MDCC Alumni Association.
