What You Need To Participate In On-Line Instruction

  • It is the student's responsibility to ensure that they have access to a computer that meets the minimum hardware and software requirements to participate in an on line course.  Keep in mind that the minimum system may be slow and cause some frustration.

  • You will need a computer connected to the internet, Pentium I or greater and a minimum of 16 MB of ram. Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, or XP or a Mac 7.5 or greater are needed. Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater seems to be the preferred browser. Students have reported numerous problems when using AOL to access on-line courses. The AOL Browser is incompatible with portions of the class delivery system, especially the online testing portion.  If you use AOL, you must be able to access Netscape or Internet Explorer.  Do not use the AOL browser!

  • You need a word processing program capable of producing "Word" documents.  Certain classes may require additional software.  Please review each course listing for specific requirements.

  • A 3.5" HD floppy drive, a cd-rom drive a sound card and at least a 28.8kbs modem are needed.

  • You should have a basic knowledge of the use of e-mail. You must have an email address prior to registering for on-line classes. Generally, your ISP ( internet service provider ) will provide you with an email address.   Free email accounts are available on the internet. You may register for free email at any of the following websites: Hotmail,  YahooExcite, or Juno.

  • You will need time to study and an interest in learning

  • Certain courses will have more specific requirements.

  • An online course frees you from having to come to campus for regularly scheduled classes.  Instead you access your course through the internet.

  • We utilize the BlackBoard Software Program for class delivery.  You will access your class site to retrieve class materials and assignments, you may participate in group discussions over the internet at specified times, you may participate in discussion forums on your own schedule, you will interact with classmates and instructors through e-mail, and take quizzes on-line.

  • Classes frequently require one or more proctored tests.  Mississippi Community Colleges provide on campus testing centers. If you do not have access to one of these, we will work with you to chose a proctor that meets our standards.  These special proctors must be arranged and approved with the DLC.

  • You can receive financial aid for distance learning courses.  Check with the Financial Aid Department.

  • On line courses do require textbooks.  See the text book page for a list of books and information on where to procure them.
