Football & Track

Benton excelled through junior high school where he lettered three years in football and track and in high school he lettered three years each in football, track, basketball, and baseball. In high school he was a member of the Greenwood High School mile relay team that set a Big 8 and State record in 1953 that was not broken until the 1964.

Benton continued his outstanding sports career at Sunflower Junior College where as a freshman he lettered as an end on the football team and as a low hurdler on the track team. He was also named to the ā€œSā€ Club and was elected Most Handsome and Class Favorite. During his sophomore year he lettered in football as guard and was named 1st Team All State and 2nd Team All American. He also finished second in the low hurdles in the State Track meet that year.

Benton White went on to play two years at Mississippi State University where he played both offense and defense. He was an inside linebacker on defense and a guard on offense. He senior year the 1957 Bulldogs went 6-2-1.
