Charles Cole, Class of 1978

Basketball

Cole led the Trojans in scoring during both the 1977 and 1978 season. In his first game he also had his highest scoring game putting up 42 points. Cole led the Trojans to a State Championship in 1977. During his time at MDCC he was named to the All-State First Team both his freshman and sophomore year. In his sophomore year he participated in the state All-Star game. Charles also received First Team All-Region XVIII honors and was the MVP in Basketball.

Cole went on to Delta State University where he was a member of the Basketball team. He led the team in scoring for both years. He was also named to the All-Region Team as a senior.

Charles was picked in the 9th round of the NBA draft in 1980 by the Kansas City Kings, now know as the Sacramento Kings.

Cole has taught and coached for the past 29 years. He spent 8 years in Drew where his teams went 114-92 and were Division Champs in 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1990. He spent the next 11 years at Cleveland.

Charles has coached the Gentry Rams since 2001 and is currently 199-90. In 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2009 his team was Division Champs. In 2006 Cole’s team went 34-5 and were Division Champs, North State Champs, and State Runner-up. While at Gentry, Coach Cole has been named NCAC Coach of the Year 4 times.
