Kelly played basketball, baseball, and ran track for both years while at Sunflower Junior College. Kelly claimed the State Championship as a freshman in the high jump and finished third in the 880 yard run. His sophomore year Edward finished second in the state in high jump. Kelly was also a member of the “M” Club.
Ed went on to letter in basketball and baseball at Livingston State College. He coached at Ferry Pass Jr. High in Pensacola, FL for two years and West Tallahatchie High School in Charleston, MS for two years before earning his degree from Delta State University in 1970. He helped Coach “Wig” Reilly coach Track and Cross Country at DSU and had an undefeated track season and National Champion high jumper.
From 1971-1980 Kelly coached track at the University of South Alabama. The Jaguars competed in the Sunbelt Conference his last four years there and he earned Coach of the Year honors twice by directing his team to conference championships.
Kelly went to work for the Port of Mobile in 1980 serving as a representative, patrolman, and port agent for 26 years until his retirement in 2007. During those years, he served as secretary-treasurer of the Maritime Council in Mobile and was a delegate to the council’s national convention seven times.
