Induction Class of 2009
In his freshman year Harris played in the last game in the old gymnasium located behind today’s Stanny Sanders Library. The Trojans center led Mississippi Delta to a 17-5 record and a North Division Championships. Harris earned Honorable Mention All-State honors that year. During his sophomore year Harris was the team’s leading scorer and earned All-State honors and MVP.
After graduating from MDJC, Harris accepted a basketball scholarship to Shaw College in Detroit, Michigan, but after one semester returned to the Delta and accepted a scholarship to play for Mississippi Valley State. Leon finished his basketball career as co-captain of the Delta Devils and earned a B.S. in Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Harris continued his education at Alcorn State University earning his Masters in Physical Education.
Since college, Harris has worked as a police officer, an Emergency Medical Technician, Athletic Residence Hall Director, Residential Life Director, and as a University Health Instructor at Jackson State University.
Leon Harris is best know in the Mississippi Community College circle as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Hinds Community College in Utica.
