Delta Sweeps Southwest

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans got back in the winning grove Wednesday by sweeping South Division foe Southwest Community College 3-2 in game one and 10-3 in the nightcap.

There were five lead changes in game. The Bears scored a single and it wasn’t until the bottom of the third that Delta tied the game on a single by Brandon Cummins that scored Conner Osborne. The Trojans took a one run lead in the fourth when Jacob Shempert powered a line drive over the right field wall.

The game was tied again when the Bears scored a single run in the sixth inning then Mississippi Delta clinched the game in the bottom of the final frame when Ty Dean scored on a fielder’s choice. Matt Ray took the win in the mound for Delta pitching one inning.

Southwest scored two runs on six hits while the Trojans scored their three runs on six run. Brandon Cummins, Jacob Shempert, Michael Beloso, Conner Osborne, Jason Berry and Tyler Mize all had one hit apiece in the game.

The Trojans struck early and fast in game two scoring two runs in the first inning and adding five runs in the second and two runs in the third to take a 9-0 lead into the fifth inning when the Bears finally got on the boar with three runs. Delta added a run in the fifth to make it an even 10.

The Trojans scored their 10 runs on 10 hits with no errors while the Bears could only manage three runs on seven hits with five errors. Chandler Massengale took the win going 4.1 innings and giving up three runs on six hits with one strikeout and three walks.

Brandon Cummins had an RBI triple that scored two runs. Chase Palasini had two hits in the game Peyton Callahan had two hits, and Carson Crites had one hit and two RBI’s. Elgin Lafever, Jason Berry, Jacob Shempert and Tays Hardy all added a hit apiece.

The Trojans are now 19-11 overall and 8-4 in the North Division. They will host North Division opponent Coahoma Community College Saturday with game one (a nine inning affair) scheduled for 1 p.m.
