MDCC Splits With East Central

In Mississippi Delta’s first matchup with East Central Community College two weeks ago the Lady Trojans won and the Trojans lost. That scenario was reversed Thursday night in Moorhead as the Delta women dropped a 76-70 decision to the Lady Warriors and the Trojans defeated the Warriors 73-57.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick three point lead and lead by one point, 9-8, at the 17:03 mark in the first half. That was the last time East Central would see the lead as the Trojans went on a scoring tear that saw sophomore center James Evans score 12 first half points and sophomore guard Marcus Boddie score 10. Mississippi Delta led 40-21 at the break.

The Warriors fought back in the second half and cut Delta’s lead to 13 points on four different occasions but each time the Trojans rebounded and pushed their lead into the upper teens leading by as much as 20 points, 51-31, at one point in the half.

Boddie lead the Trojans in scoring with 18 points while Evans followed closely with 16 points and earned another double-double with 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward D’ante Russell-Hall also scored in double figures with 10 points while sophomore guard Johnny Rucker just missed with nine points.

The win improves the Trojans’ overall record to 5-3. The Lady Trojans loss drops their overall record to 5-2.

In the women’s game the lead changed 10 times in the first half with the Lady Trojans coming out on top by three, 38-35, at the break.
Delta expanded that lead to five points in the early going of the second stanza before their shooting turned cold. The Lady Warriors quickly took advantage and pushed out to a double digit lead for most of the remainder of the game.

The Lady Trojans finally broke the double digit strangle hold with 2:31 left in the game and cut East Central’s lead to three points, 73-70, with 42 seconds remaining. But, that was as close as they would get as the Lady Warriors hit several free throws in the final seconds to win by six points.

Sophomore guard Krystal Nailer led the Delta women in scoring with 20 points for the night. She was followed in double digits by freshman guard Kalesha Williams with 13 points and sophomore forward Ashanti Spencer with 11 points while sophomore guard Alexus Ward added nine.

Both teams will take next week off for Fall Break and the Thanksgiving holiday and return to action on Monday, December 2, when they travel to Wesson to take on the Wolves and Lady Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
