MDCC Sweeps East Mississippi In North Division Play

Mississippi Delta brought out the brooms Monday night against North Division rival East Mississippi Community College as the Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Lions 67-51 and the Trojans edged their counterpart 76-74 at Moorhead.

The Lady Trojans lead their game for the first 12 minutes, holding as much as a nine point lead at the 7:54 mark, but the Lady Lions responded with flurry of offense and good defense to end the half with a 16-4 run to take a 24-21 lead into the locker room at the break.

Five minutes into the second half the Lady Trojans took a one point lead on a three-point bucket by sophomore forward Ashanti Spencer and never looked back as they went on a 27-7 scoring spree in the next 12 minutes. The Delta held as much as a 20 point lead with three minutes remaining in the game.

Spencer, from Bentonia, had the game of her life hitting 8-15 from the floor, 2-4 from three point land, and going 10-12 from the charity stripe for a game high total of 28 points. She was followed in double figures by sophomore forward with 16 points for the night. Sophomore guard Janay Townsel led East Mississippi with 17 points.

The win puts the Lady Trojans’ record at 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the North Division race which began in earnest this week.

The Trojans and Lions had a see-saw first half with both teams taking a small lead before the Deltans pushed out to a nine point lead, 26-17, at the seven minute mark. That lead slowly melted as the Lions chipped away and the half ended with the score knotted at 32-all.

It looked like the Lions would walk away with an easy win as they led the first 17-plus minutes and held a commanding 60-51 advantage with nine minutes left in the game. But, the Trojans fought back took a one point lead, 70-69, when freshman forward Kel’Drek Young canned two free throws with 2:42 on the clock.

Two buckets by sophomore center James Evans during the next two minutes gave Delta a five point lead but a three-point shot with 29 seconds remaining pulled East Mississippi to within two points. A free throw by freshman point guard Zamarlus Griffin made it a three point game with 21 seconds while the Lions could only answer with one free throw in the final seconds.

In the final two minutes the Lions missed four of six free throws while the Trojans went 2-4 from the charity stripe.

Sophomore guard Marquarius Boddie led the Trojans in scoring with 18 points (4-5 from three point range). He was followed by sophomore guard Johnny Rucker with 14 points and James Evans with 13 points. EMCC’s sophomore guard Jacolby Mobley led the game with 20 points (5-6 treys).

The win moves the Trojans to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in North Division play. Mississippi Delta will be on the road Saturday as they travel to Clarksdale to take on North foe Coahoma community College at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
