Mississippi Delta Swept By Itawamba CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College basketball teams suffered a rare double loss Thursday night at home in Moorhead as the Itawamba Lady Indians defeated the Lady Trojans 80-66 and the Indians edged the Trojans 75-72.

The Lady Trojans, who were 4-0 in North Division play, ran into a bunch of hot-shooting Lady Indians who were 4-1 in division play and coming off their first division loss of the season.

The Itawamba women almost literally couldn’t miss as they shot 80% from the field, 70% from three point land and hit 82% of their free Throws. They were up 44-26 at the half after scoring 18 of those points off treys. Delta, on the other hand, could only manage 51% from the field, 43% from beyond the arc, and 78% from the charity stripe.

Itawamba led by as many as 24 points, 60-36, at the 12:10 point in the second half. The Lady Trojans managed to cut the lead to 16 on several occasions, but could get no closer until the final shot of the game cut the lead to 14.

Freshman forward Niya Head led the game in scoring with 23 points followed closely by sophomore guard Krystal Nailer with 22 points. They were the only Deltans in double figures. Lytia Coleman led Itawamba in scoring with 18 points.

The loss drops the Lady Trojans to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in North Division play.

The men’s game was a much tighter affair with neither team gaining more than a five point lead in the first half which ended with the Trojans down 39-34 after leading 30-25 five minutes earlier.

The second half was no different with neither team managing more than a three point lead down the stretch until the Indians pushed out to a 69-63 advantage following two free throws at the 3:21 mark.

It took over two minutes, but the Trojans fought back to take a 72-70 lead on a put back by sophomore center James Evans with 1:02 remaining. Itawamba tied the game with 46 seconds and the Trojans took their time looking for a go-ahead shot. Instead, they turned the ball over with 13 seconds remaining and the Indians sank a three-point shot at the buzzer to take the win.

Evans led the game in scoring with 21 points and scored a double-double with 12 rebounds. He was followed in double figures by sophomore forward Johnny Rucker with 18 points and sophomore guard Marquarius Boddie with 11 points. In all, 10 of the 11 Trojans who played scored points. Tyrone Wooten led Itawamba in scoring with 20 points.

The loss drops the Trojans to 7-9 overall and 1-4 in North Division play. Mississippi Delta will be on the road Monday night as they travel to Booneville to take on North Division foe Northeast Community College at 5:30 and 7:30.
