Baseball Trojans Split With Copiah-Lincoln CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team made an improbable comeback against the Co-Lin Community College Wolves Tuesday to win the first game 12-10 before dropping the night cap 7-3.

Mississippi Delta took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one before the Wolves exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh. Co-Lin added two more runs in the fourth, while Delta added one, and another run in the fifth, while MDCC added two in the bottom of the frame to make it a 10-4 contest after five innings.

Then, the Trojans exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The first run came when Ty Dean scored on a passed ball leaving two runners on base. A Jacob Shempert homer then cleared the basses. A Danny Springer single and Brandon Cummins double put two more runners on base and Carson Crites drove in the fifth run with an RBI single leaving two runners on base for Jason Berry to drive in with a second three run homer for the inning.

Shempert had a great game at the plate with five RBI’s on three hits and scoring two runs. He was followed by Jason Berry with four RBI’s on one hit with one run and Tyler Mize with three hits and two runs. Also collecting a hit each were Carson Crites, Colby Manor, Conner Osborne, and .Brandon Cummins.

Right-handed freshman Drew Pellum was the winning pitcher serving up two innings of shutout ball with two strikeouts and no walks.

The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two and held it until the Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The lead held until the fifth when the Wolves exploded for six runs in the top of the frame and the Trojans were unable to answer.

Co-Lin’s seven runs came off seven hits with one error while the Trojans’ three hits came off three runs with one error. Jason Berry led the hitting with two RBI’s off one hit. Michael Beloso and Jacob Shempert also had hits. Devonte Wilson took the loss on the mound for Delta while lefthander Paul Carpenter had a good outing giving up just one hit and no earned runs while striking out two with no walks through three complete.

Tuesday’s split leaves the Trojans at 4-4 overall. Their next scheduled games will be Friday at home against Jones Junior College. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
