Lady Trojans Eliminated From State Tournament

Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans were eliminated from the first round of the MACJC State Tournament 85-77 in OT by the Lady Eagles of meridian Community College Tuesday night at host Itawamba Community College in Fulton.

Meridian, which finished 9-5 and in second place in the South Division with a 19-5 overall record, led the turnover prone Lady Trojans by seven points halfway through the first half. Delta tightened up their play though and freshman guard Kalesha Williams added three treys to give MDCC a 32-31 lead at the break.

It seemed that the Lady Trojans would have an easy win as they pulled out to a 13 point lead in the first 11 minutes of the second half. But the Lady Eagles started fighting back and tied the game at 63-all at the 4:18 mark.

Delta rebounded to a five point lead with less than three minutes remaining but Meridian charged back, with the aid of three trips to the charity stripe which saw starters Niya Head and Ashanti Spencer foul out, and took a two point lead with nine seconds left. A bucket by Krystal Nailer sent the game into overtime.

The Lady Trojans, with two starters out, were outgunned in OT as the Lady Eagles, with only eight fouls on the board, took full advantage and finished the game up by eight, 85-77.

Nailer led Mississippi Delta with 18 points. She was followed by Kalesha Williams with 13, and Ashanti Spencer and India Overstreet with 10 points each.

The Lady Trojans end their season with an 8-4 North Division record and a 13-10 overall record.
