Trojans Sweep East Central Warriors

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans swept the East Central Warriors 3-2 and 11-9 Thursday at Moorhead.

Game one was a scheduled nine inning affair that saw the Warriors take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Delta answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame which included an RBI triple by Brandon Cummins. East Central loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but was only able to score one run.

Lefty Paul Carpenter took the win one the mound for the Trojans going eight complete with no earned runs, three hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Cummins’ triple, Tyler Mize’s two singles, and Carson Crites double, led Delta at the plate. Jacob Shempert, Danny Springer, and Colby Manor added singles. MDCC scored three runs on eight hits with two errors and left eight runners stranded. East Central had two runs on five hits and left eight stranded.

The Trojans spotted the Warriors nine runs in game two but never gave up in the comeback of the season, thus far.

East Central opened the game with a solo homerun and then added two more runs to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. They added another run in the second inning and then seemingly cinched the win with a five run third inning that saw the Trojans give up three runs on two passed balls and three walks.

The Trojans weren’t quite ready to roll over and play dead. Sophomore Danny Springer got things going with a three run homer in the bottom of the third. Then Delta added four more runs in the fourth with the help of RBI’s by Michael Beloso, Springer, Carson Crites. They tied the game in the fifth with two more runs courtesy of a two run single by Brandon Cummins.

The sun had set and the street lights were all on as the Trojans shut down the Warriors for the third consecutive inning in the sixth. Colby Manor got on base with a single and Ty Dean drew a walk with one out when a passed ball at the plate scored the go-ahead run. Peyton Callahan’s sacrifice fly scored the final run for Delta and the game was called on account of darkness.

Jacob Shempert pitched two shutout innings for MDCC to take the win and was one of seven hurlers to take the mound for the Trojans. The Warriors used five pitchers in their losing effort. The Trojans’ 11 runs came on nine hits with one error and Delta left seven runners stranded. East Central’s nine runs came on nine hits and they left eight on the base paths.

Danny Springer led Delta at the plate with two hits and four RBIs while Carson Crites had two doubles and one RBI.

The wins move the Trojans to 8-6 overall.
