Trojans Open North Division Play With Sweep

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans opened North Division play Saturday at home with a sweep of Coahoma Community College, 9-1 and 5-1.

The Tigers opened game one with three straight singles and grabbed a 1-0 lead before running errors sent them to the dugout. Sophomore lefthander Devontae Wilson settled down after that and went six complete innings giving up just two more hits and no runs.

The Trojans scored tied the game in the bottom of the second and then scored four runs in the third inning, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the win. Peyton Callahan hit into two singles and a RBI. Brandon Cummins scored two runs with a single, Colby Manor had two singles and Carson Crites had an RBI single. Jason Berry also had a single.

The Tigers scored one run on five hits and left two runners stranded on base while the Trojans scored nine runs on eight hits and left three men on base.

In game two, the Trojans scored two runs in the first inning, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the fifth while the Tigers lone run came in the third inning.

Danny Springer led Mississippi Delta at the plate with a two run homer and a single while Jason Berry added an RBI double and a single. Brandon Cummins hit into a double while Jacob Shempert and Conner Osborne added singles.

The Tigers had one run on four hits and left four runners stranded while the Trojans had five runs on seven hits and left six men on base. Paul Carpenter went four and two-thirds innings striking out three and walking two.

The wins move Mississippi Delta to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in North Division play. The next scheduled game is Saturday, March 15, at home against North Division foe East Mississippi Community College. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
