Trojans Split With Holmes CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans split a pair of baseball games with Holmes Community College in Goodman Monday getting edged 6-5 in game one before blowing the Bulldogs out of the water, 14-1, in game two.

The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one with one run in the first and two runs in the second but the Bulldogs answered with a single run in the bottom of the second and then tied the game with a two run fourth. MDCC regained the lead with a run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings but Holmes won the game with a three run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

Devontae Wilson went the distance for the Trojans giving up six runs on just four hits while striking out five batters and walking two. Jacob Shempert went 3-4 at the plate with one double and an RBI while Brandon Cummins had two hits including a double and Carson Crites added a triple. Jason Berry also had a hit in the game.

Game two lasted only five innings and the big reason was the eight runs the Trojans scored in the top of the second. Thanks in part to RBI doubles by Brandon Cummins, Jacob Shempert, and Jason Berry and three walks by the Bulldogs.

The Trojans then added three runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth while Holmes was only able to manage a lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Tre Hobbs took the win on the mound going four innings and giving up one run on just three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Kyle Wilson closed out the fifth inning on the mound for Delta with all zeros.

Sophomore Brandon Cummins came close to hitting for the cycle going 3-3 at the plate with a single in the first, a double in the second, and a homerun in the fourth. In all, he drove in five of the Trojans’ runs. Jacob Shempert went 2-3 with a two run homer and four RBI’s for the day. Tyler Mize, Danny Springer, Carson Crites, Jason Berry, Michael Beloso, and Peyton Callahan rounded out the eight Trojans who got hits in the game.
