Trojans drop season opener to Co-Lin

WESSON – Mississippi Delta Community College played hard Thursday night in its season opener against the No. 7 Wolves of Copiah-Lincoln Community College (1-0, 0-0), but moved to 0-1 (0-0) on the year after a 44-0 loss.

Co-Lin received the first possession of the ballgame from an MDCC kickoff and quickly turned it into a scoring drive. Ladarious Galloway, an Indianola native, drove the ball up the middle to put six on the board for the Wolves. Griffin Sublett’s extra point was good to make it a 7-0 affair with 12:30 left in the first quarter.

The Trojans first two plays from scrimmage ended with an incomplete pass and a quarterback sack for a loss that pushed MDCC back to their own two-yard line. Their third down play ended with a Co-Lin safety improving their lead to 9-0 with 11:35 left in the first quarter.

MDCC could not get the ball in the end zone in the fist half and went to the locker room with Co-Lin leading 37-0 at halftime.

The Trojan defense made a loud stand with less than 13 minutes left to play in the third quarter with back-to-back quarterback sacks by freshman linebackers Kameria McClendon and Terrance Harris for a loss in yards.

Those back-to-back sacks and a third down play for no gain forced Co-Lin to punt near the 11 minute mark of the third quarter.

Freshman quarterback Austin Guy from Natchitoches, La. led the Trojans offensively going 6-for-19 for 41 passing yards.

Freshman punter LaDaveon Smith had a productive night unofficially averaging 25 yards a punt with a 53 yarder in the second quarter.

Mississippi Delta will host Jones County Junior College at Jim Randall Stadium Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 7 p.m. for its first home game of the season.
