Trojans split MACJC double dip with Northwest

The Mississippi Delta Community College baseball team split a Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) home doubleheader versus Northwest Community College on Wednesday afternoon in Moorhead.

The Trojans won game one over Northwest, 6-5, before falling 4-1 in the nightcap. The two-game split puts Delta at 23-13 overall and 10-8 in the MACJC with 10 conference games remaining in the regular season.

Hunter Allen (Pearl) was the winner on the hill in the opener, battling through an early 5-0 deficit and twirling seven innings, including five straight shutout innings from the third inning on. Wesley Ross (Bruce) threw the final two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Jake Hartman (Horn Lake) and Wendell Rieves (Crawford) each hit two-run home runs to lead the Delta offense and each finished with two hits in game one. Payton Lane (Columbus) led all hitters with three hits and an RBI in the first game.

In game two, the Trojans picked up seven hits, including two from both Rieves and Kaleb Bell (Houston, Texas), but it was not enough, as the Rangers came away with a split and a 4-1 win.

Brandon Kessner (Gretna, La.) was the tough-luck loser on the mound, despite throwing 5.1 innings and only allowing three earned runs to cross the plate.

Mississippi Delta was scheduled to host No. 1 ranked Jones County Junior College on Saturday, but due to heavy rains in the forecast, the Trojans and Bobcats will now play at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Jimmy Bellipanni Baseball Complex in Moorhead.
