Baseball Trojans set for MACJC playoffs

The Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state baseball playoffs get underway on Wednesday and the Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans will head to Decatur to take on East Central Community College in a best two-of-three series.

The Trojans of MDCC will take on the Warriors of EC at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening in game one at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex, with game two getting underway on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will follow at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Thursday night.

Mississippi Delta will enter the first round of the playoffs as the number seven seed in the MACJC, while East Central comes in as the number four seed, thus earning the right to host the opening round. Only one game separates the two in the final conference standings, as EC finished with a 17-11 conference mark and MDCC had a conference record of 16-12.

The Trojans come into the playoffs with a 29-17 overall mark and 16-12 finish in MACJC play after a week in which the team split a doubleheader on the road at Coahoma Community College (May 2) and at Copiah-Lincoln Community College (May 6).
Mississippi Delta fell in game one, 6-3, in Clarksdale on Tuesday, before winning the nightcap, 18-13.

In game one at CCC on Tuesday, the Trojans were led offensively by Will Godfrey (Columbus), Nathan Pilutti (Destrehan, La.) and Wendell Rieves (Crawford), as the trio each had two hits in the opener.
Hunter Allen (Pearl) started the contest on the mound and gave the Trojans five solid innings of work, as the freshman left-hander gave up five runs (one earned) and picked up a strikeout.
Weber Herbison (Cleveland) had four hits in the nightcap on Tuesday, including a grand slam, to help lead the 21-hit Trojan attack.
Dalton Lambre (Cleveland) and Pilutti each added three hits in game two, with Pilutti picking up a home run as well.

Brendan Painter (Hernando) earned the win on the mound in game two after his relief stint of 3.1 innings.
The Trojans of MDCC fell to Co-Lin, 3-2, in the series opener on Saturday in Wesson, despite a stellar effort on the hill from Trey Jones (Olive Branch), as the freshman right-hander threw seven innings and allowed only three runs (two earned) to cross the plate.

Herbison and Pilutti each had two RBI in game one, with Pilutti and Tyler Jones (Columbus) each adding an RBI.

Delta avenged their earlier loss in game one by hammering the home standing Wolves, 10-2, in the regular season finale.

Rieves paced the Trojans offense with two homeruns and five RBI, while Payton Lane (Columbus) added two hits as well.

Cole Marsh (Monroe, La.), a recent Mississippi State University commit, moved to 10-1 on the season with the win on the mound after going six innings and allowing only two runs and five hits, while picking up five strikeouts.
