Trojans Fall Short 36-31 to East Central

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans came within one minute and 53 seconds of ruining their second consecutive Homecoming as they took a 31-30 lead over the East Central Community College Warriors following a two point conversion run by Edward McCadney in Saturday in Decatur.

But, the Warriors returned the ensuing kickoff to their own 46 yard line and proceeded to march 54 yards in five plays which culminated in a 37 yard TD toss from quarterback Donnie Farmer to wide receiver Desmond Grayson for the winning score.

The Trojans didn't seem like they would be in the contest at all as the Warriors opened the game with two quick scores. The first touchdown came on East Central’s first possession when they drove 65 yards in just three plays to score on a 43 yard run by workhorse running back LaMarcus Franks. The 5-7, 150-pound spark plug rushed 27 times for 209 yards and two touchdowns against the Trojans.

The second score came just a couple of minutes later when an East Central defensive back stepped in front of a Lane Williams pass at the Trojans’ 21 yard line. It took the Warriors five plays to score on a pass from QB Donnie Farmer to James Clark. Suddenly, the Warriors had a 14-0 lead.

But, the Trojans bounced back with 5:330 left in the game when Jaylon Daniels connected with wide receiver Pasarrio Collins on a 41 yard TD pass that capped a 50 yard, four play drive. The PAT went wide leaving Delta trailing 14-6 in the first quarter.

Mississippi Delta held the Warriors on their next two possessions and then drove 58 yards in just five plays to score another touchdown, this one a 27 yard pass from Daniels to Carlton Archer. The PAT by Zacarion Goodman sailed through the uprights leaving the Trojans trailing 14-13 at the 14:02 mark of the second quarter.

The remainder of the first half was a see-saw battle that didn't see any additional scoring until late in the half when the Trojans mounted an 11-play 65-yard drive that ended with Goodman splitting the uprights on a 26 yard field goal with seven seconds remaining. Mississippi Delta took a 16-14 lead into the dressing room at the break.

The Warriors opened the second half by marching 62 yards in nine plays. The drive ended with Martin Johnson charging in from five yards out. A two point conversion pass made it 22-16. East Central dominated the third quarter racking up seven first downs and only allowing the Trojans two possession in which they went three-an-out both times.

East Central opened the fourth quarter by driving 82 yards in 10 plays with LaMarcus Franks scoring his second TD of the night on a 16 yard run. The two point PAT gave the Warriors a commanding 30-16 lead, but the Trojans weren't finished yet.

They proceeded to take the ensuing kickoff and drive 93 yards in 15 plays with QB Jaylon Daniels finding Kameron Carter in the end zone on an 11 yard pass. Goodman’s PAT closed the gap to 30-23.

The Trojans then got the ball back and mounted another long drive, this one 68 yards in eight plays that ended when Daniels again found Carter on a 22 yard pass. At this point Head Coach Jeff Tatum decided to go for the win with a two-point PAT. The hand-off went to Trojans’ running back Edward McCadney who headed for the middle of the line then suddenly broke left and raced in untouched to give Delta a 31-30 lead with 1:53 remaining in the game.

Unfortunately, the Warriors answered by going 54 yards in five plays and scoring on a 37 yard pass from Farmer to Desmond Grayson for a 36-31 win. The loss drops MDCC to 1-6 overall and gives the Warriors their first win of the season.

Statistically the Trojans had their biggest night of the season rushing 35 times for 230 yards and hitting 14-30 passes for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Delta ended the night with a 415 yard offensive effort. The Warriors rushed 37 times for 247 yards and hit 10-23 passes for 118 yards for a 365 yard total.

Individually, Delta’s Edward McCadney carried the load on the ground for Delta rushing 22 times for 132 yards while Roshard Burney rushed six times for 54 yards and Jaylon Daniels rushed six times for 43 yards. QB Daniels also connected in 12-26 passes for 189 yards and four TD’s. Pasarrio Collins led all receivers with six catches for 80 yards while Kameron Carter had two catches for 33 yards, both TD’s.

The Trojans also racked up 20 first downs to the Warriors’ 14 and were flagged 10 times for 90 yards while East Central earned seven penalties for 70 yards.

The Trojans will be back at home this Saturday at 2 p.m. for a Homecoming match-up with the Coahoma Community College Tigers.
