Trojans Defeat Coahoma Tigers For Homecoming

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans defeated the Coahoma Community College Tigers 20-7 Saturday afternoon to cap off Homecoming activities in Moorhead.

It was the Edward McCadney show all day long for the Trojans as Delta’s quarterbacks spent most of the afternoon simply wheeling and dealing to the 5-9, 234-pound sophomore running back from Renova. At the end of the day, McCadney had carried the ball 42 times for 137 yards and one touchdown.

The first quarter turned out to be a draw as both 1-6 teams took the measure of the other. Then, halfway through the second quarter the Tigers fumbled the ball away on their own 44 yard line. It took the Trojans seven plays, with McCadney running six of those for 33 yards, to score on a seven yard plunge by the running back. Zacarion Goodman’s PAT gave Delta a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers took the ensuing kickoff at their one yard line and proceeded to drive 99 yards in 10 plays to tie the game on a five yard pass from quarterback Anthony Mitchell to Keenan Daniels. Mitchell led the Tigers on the drive with passes of 32 and 15 yards.

The Trojans ended the first half by driving 50 yards in nine plays before being forced to try a 26 yard field goal on third down and goal-to-go from the nine because there was only five minutes remaining in the half. The kick sailed wide. The Tigers also missed on a 19 yard field goal in the first quarter.

The score remained knotted at 7-all through the third quarter but the Trojans opened the final stanza with a 10 play drive that covered 85 yards and ended with a 29 yard TD pass from quarterback Jaylon Daniels to wide receiver Carlton Archer.

The Tigers fumbled away the ensuing kickoff at their own 27 yard line and the Trojans iced the game by scoring eight plays later on a five yard effort by McCadney. The PAT sailed wide. The game ended following an interception by Trojans’ defensive back Jamichael Winners at the Coahoma 48 yard line.

Statistically the game belonged to the Trojans who rushed 64 times for 238 yards and completed 6-14 passes for 66 yards for a 304 yard total. The Tigers rushed 26 times for 53 yards and completed 3-13 passes for 75 yards for a 128 yard total.

Individually Edward McCadney rushed 42 times for 137 yards and two TD’s while quarterback Jaylon Daniels rushed 10 times for 76 yards and Roshard Burney had nine carries for 30 yards. Daniels completed 4-9 passes for 53 yards and a TD.

Unofficially the Trojans racked up 19 first downs and were flagged nine times for 70 yards. The Tigers had nine first downs, all in the first half, and were flagged five times for 40 yards.

The Trojans will be on the road next Thursday as they travel to Booneville to take on the Northeast Mississippi Community College Tigers at 6:30 for the final regular scheduled game of the season.
