Trojans Face Northeast Tigers In Final Game

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans will play their final football game of the season Thursday night against the Northeast Community College Tigers at 6:30 p.m. in Booneville.

The Northeast Tigers enter this week’s game sporting a 3-2 North Division record and a 3-5 overall record while the Trojans are 2-3 in the North and 2-6 overall following last week’s 20-7 Homecoming win over Coahoma Community College.

This season the Tigers have defeated Holmes Community College 17-14, Northwest Community College 34-21, and Coahoma Community College 27-17. They lost close games to Copiah-Lincoln Community College 29-20, Jones Junior College 34-28, and Itawamba Community College 36-33 last week while suffering a 28-14 loss to Gulf Coast Community College and a 59-0 whipping by East Mississippi Community College.

Offensively Northeast is ranked sixth in the state in total offense averaging 398 yards per game and 11th in the state in total defense allowing 417 yards per game.

The Tigers are led by quarterback Jerrard Randall (6-1, 188 sophomore from Miami, FL) who is averaging 106 yards per game passing and is the third leading rusher with 48 yards per game. Mitchell Cunningham (5-8, 220 freshman from Ecru) leads all Northeast ground gainers with 114 yards per game. He is followed by Corbin White (5-11, 220 freshman from Nettleton) with 56 yards per game.

This final game of the season is just for bragging rights since East Mississippi (5-0, 8-0) is the No.1 team in the North Division and Itawamba (4-1, 6-2) locked up second place in the North Division with last week’s win over Northeast.

The Jones Bobcats (5-1, 7-1) are the No. 1 team in the South Division followed by the Gulf Coast Bulldogs (4-1, 7-1). The first games of the state playoffs will pit Jones against Itawamba and Gulf Coast against East Mississippi.
