The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans will open their 2014 football season Thursday night at 7:00 in the friendly confines of Jim Randall Stadium on the campus in Moorhead when they take on the Warriors of East Central Community College.

Both teams will be looking to better their records from the 2013 season when the Lions went 1-8 and the Trojans went 2-7.

Mississippi Delta Head Coach Jeff Tatum, in his second year at the helm, said, “We feel like we’ve come a long way since last season. We now have our players who have bought into our program and we’ve had a number of these players here since last year and all through the spring. We also have a coaching staff in place that has had a year to get things organized.”

“Last year we were trying to organized and get a coaching staff together. We now have our kids and they are working hard and are now doing the things we want them to do and buying into our philosophy, Tatum said.

This year the Trojans have three strong contenders at the quarterback position. They are sophomore Jaylon Daniels (5-11, 180) of Greenwood, and freshmen Devontae McPherson 6-0, 175 of Greenville and Devin Adams 6-4, 245 of Mobile, AL.

Daniels played in a two-quarterback set up last year and completed 61 of 136 (45%) of his passes with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also rushed 42 times for 224 yards (5.3 avg.).

Devonte McPherson comes to Delta from Greenville St. Joe where he completed 148 of 269 passes (.55%) last year for 2,487 yards and 28 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. Devin Adams played at Prichard High School where he threw for 2,380 yards and 20 TD’s and rushed for 268 yards and two TD’s as a junior.

“Both freshmen are talented and good athletes and either one will be able to take over if Jaylon doesn’t work out,” Tatum said.

Returning running backs for the Trojans will be Roshard Burney (5-11, 219) out of West Palm Beack, FL. And Donald Jackson (5-8, 165) out of Greenville. Burney rushed 42 time for 170 yards (4.0) last season while Jackson rushed 14 times for 55 yards in four games.

Wide receiver Kameron Carter (6-0, 170) of Greenwood is the only returning receiver who saw action last season. In eight games he caught 10 passes for 95 yards (15.8 avg.).

The offensive line returns three starters in Josh Cooper (6-1, 315) of Yazoo City, MacJavoris Tims (6-0, 290) of Greenwood and Edrick Thig¬pen (6-3, 325) of Drew.

The defense will be the Trojans’ bright spot this season with a lot of returning experience. The defensive line includes sophomore Demerrius Williams (6-3, 60) of Shaw and Tony Williams (6-0, 260) of Jackson. Also returning are linebackers Dwight Griggs (6-1, 205) and Alex Johnson (6-1, 235), both of Greenwood). Cedric Poole (5-10, 192) of Birmingham also returns in the defensive backfield.

The Trojans are picked to finish fifth in the North Division behind 2013 National Champs East Mississippi, Itawamba CC, Northeast CC, and Holmes CC. The Warriors are picked to finish last in the South Division.
