Trojans Take Sole Possession Of First Place

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans claimed sole possession of first place in the North Division this weekend with a sweep of Itawamba Community College at Fulton. The Trojans defeated the Indians 6-5 in game on and 11-6 in game two.

The wins move Mississippi Delta’s division record to 7-1 and their overall record to 16-8. North Division foes East Mississippi are 5-1, Northeast Community College is 4-2, Northwest Community College is 4-4, Itawamba Community College drops to 2-4, Holmes Community College is 2-6, and Coahoma is 0-6.

Game one saw the Indians take a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Trojans tied the game in the third and then added three runs in the fourth inning. Itawamba added one run in the fourth and one in the fifth and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two additional runs.

The game went into extra innings after being tied at the end of the seventh. Delta won in the eighth when a sacrifice fly by Michael Beloso scored Carson Crites. Winning pitcher Matt Ray held Itawamba scoreless in the bottom of the frame. Ray went three innings giving up five hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one. Starter Devontae Wilson went five innings giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Carson Crites went 3-4 at the plate while Danny Springer batted in two runs on two hits and Peyton Callahan had two hits and one RBI. Jason Berry had one hit and two RBI’s while Tyler Mize added two hits and Brandon Cummins added one.

In game two the Trojans scored two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third while the Indians answered with four runs in the bottom of the third and then tied the game with a single run in the fourth. The game remained tied after five innings as both teams added a run each but the Trojans broke things open with four runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh for a convincing 11-6 win.

Drew Pellum took the win on the mound for Delta going one-and-two-thirds innings and allowing one run while striking out two batters.

Eight Trojans got hits in the game with Brandon Cummins going 3-5 at the plate. Colby Manor and Jason Berry had two hits and two RBI’s while Danny Springer had two hits and one RBI and Tays Hardy had two hits. Jacob Shempert and Michael Beloso had one hit and two RBI’s each and Carson Crites had an RBI hit.

The Trojans have two games remaining in the first round of North Division play. They will host Northeast Community College Wednesday at the Jimmy Bellipanni Baseball Complex in Moorhead. First pitch is 1 p.m. Then they will travel to Goodman Saturday to take on Holmes Community College. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
