MDCC Baseball Grand Slam Dinner Set For February 7

Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans baseball fans are invited to the fourth Annual Grand Slam Dinner on Saturday, February 7th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Herman Thigpen Cafeteria on the Moorhead Campus. This year’s guest speaker will be Mike DeJean, former Major League pitcher and MDCC Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

The dinner provides alumni, fans, family and friends a chance to meet the 2015 Trojans baseball team and coaches before the February 10th season opener against Southwest TN CC at Moorhead. Tickets for the event are $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 12 and under.

Mike DeJean was the Trojans outstanding shortstop in 1989 and 1990 under Hall of Fame Coach Terry Thompson helping the Trojans to a MACJC State Championship and a NJCAA Region XXIII Championship. He went on to Livingston State University (now West Alabama) where he helped the Tigers advance to the Division II College World Series.

Following his senior year he was drafted by the New York Yankees as a pitcher. He was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 1996 for Joe Girardi and made his professional debut on May 2, 1997 pitching against the Philadelphia Phillies. During his four seasons he went 5-0 with a 3.99 ERA in 55 appearances, mostly as a mid-reliever.

He then played two years for the Milwaukee Brewers and achieved success as a closer during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. In 2002 he had 27 saves out of 30 appearances. He went on to play for the both the St. Louis Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles and was named Player of the Week for May 26 – June 1, 2003.

DeJean was traded to the New York Mets in 2004 and recorded 24 strikeouts during 21 innings in 16 games - good enough for a 1.69 ERA. In 2005 he rejoined the Rockies where he posted a 3.19 ERA in 38 games, all in relief. Injuries ended his career that year.
