Trojans Split With Co-Lin CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans baseball team traveled to Wesson Wednesday and split a double header with the Copiah-Lincolns Community College Wolves losing the first game 11-0 and winning game two 10-9.

The Wolves jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first inning of game one and then added a run in the second inning and two in the fourth while holding the Trojans scoreless one just three hits. Co-Lin’s 11 runs came on 10 hits and both teams stranded five runners on base.

Freshman left-hander Tre Hobbs was the losing pitcher in the contest giving up eight runs on four hits with one strikeout and four walks in two innings of work. Right-hander Tyler Milligan pitched one-and-a-third innings in relief giving up one run and one hit with one walk. D.J. Stewart (two innings) finished the game giving up two runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk each. Demarcus Mahone, Matt Ray and Clay LaBeff all had one hit apiece in the game.

Game two was a different affair. The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first inning while the Wolves answered with single runs in the first, second and third to take a 3-1 lead. Delta added three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth but the Wolves tied the game at 8-all with three runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh Peyton Callahan singled and scored Jordan Lambert and Matt Ray to give the Trojans a 10-8 lead. Co-Lin could only manage one run in the bottom of the seventh as the leadoff batter tripled and scored on a single by the next batter. Freshman lefty Tyler Dowdy then struck out the next two batters. The game ended on a line-out to second baseman Clay LaBeff.

Dowdy was the winning pitcher going two-and-a-third innings and giving up one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Starter Kyle Wilson went three innings giving up four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk while Lee Quates (1.2 innings) gave up four runs on four hits.

Jordan Lambert led the Trojans at the plate with four hits, three RBI’s, and three runs. Matt Ray had two hits and two RBI’s while Peyton Callahan had one hit and two RBI’s. Demarcus Mahone, Ty Dean and Tays Hardy had two hits each while Michael Beloso and Clay LaBeff had one hit each.

The Trojans are currently 5-2 overall. Their next scheduled games will be Friday at Ellisville against the Bobcats of Jones Junior College. The 7-1 Bobcats are the defending State Champions and ended the 2014 regular season ranked sixth in the nation. First pitch is 2 p.m.
