Trojans Split With Itawamba Indians

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans split a conference double header with Itawamba Community College Wednesday at Fulton getting edged 2-1 in game one while winning the night cap 4-2.

The Indians scored both of their runs in the first inning in game one on solo homers and then were kept off the scoreboard by the Trojans’ defense. But, Itawamba’s defense held Mississippi Delta in check until the top of the ninth when Ty Dean walked with bases loaded and two outs before the side was retired.

The Trojans scored one run on eight hits with one error and left eight runners stranded. The Indians scored two runs on six hits with one error and left seven runs on base. Jordan Lambert led Delta at the plate with two hits while Ty Dean was credited with one hit and an RBI. Clay LaBeff, Michael Beloso, Gregory Tierce, Ayreon Davis, and Tays Hardy all had one hit apiece.

In game two the Indians got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Delta tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth and then took the win with two runs in the seventh inning.

The Trojans’ four runs came off seven hits with no errors and they left five runners stranded. The Indians two runs came off four hits with no errors and they also left five runners on the base paths. Ayreon Davis led Delta with three hits while Michael Beloso, Ty Dean, and Caleb Brown all had an RBI hit each.

Pitcher Tre Hobbs went the distance for Delta giving up just to runs on four hits while striking out seven batters and walking only one.

The split brings the Trojans’ overall record to 14-19 for the year and evens their conference record at 8-8. This leaves Mississippi Delta in eighth place in the state with just five dates (all double headers) remaining. The top eight teams in the state will go on to play in the state tournament.

The Trojans next date is scheduled for Saturday at home against the Pearl River Community College Wildcats who are 9-25 overall and 3-15 in conference play. First pitch is scheduled 1 p.m.
