Trojans Split With JCJC

The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojans split a conference double header with the Jones County Junior College Bobcats Thursday night at Delta State University winning the first game 7-4 before being edged 1-0 in game two.

In game one the Bobcats scored one run in the first inning, one in the fourth, and two in the ninth while the Trojans scored three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and three more in the seventh to take the decision. Jones four runs came off nine hits with no errors and seven runners left on base. Delta’s seven runs came off 12 hits with two errors and nine men left on base.

Caleb Brown led the Trojans with three hits and two RBI’s, while Michael Beloso had one hit and three RBI’s. Dashawn Lindsay added two hits and an RBI and Matt Ray got two hits. Jordan Lambert, Ayreon Davis, Tays Hardy and Demarcus Mahone all had a hit apiece.

Peyton Callahan went nine complete innings on the mound for the Trojans giving up four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and only one walk.

The Bobcats scored the second games’ lone run in the top of the first inning before the game turned into a defensive battle. Jones’ lefty Will Hazen allowed Delta just two hits and three walks and the Trojans left six runners stranded. Matt Rays started for the Trojans going 1.1 innings and giving up one run on two hits. Lee Quates went four complete giving up no hits while striking out five and walking just one batter. Tyler Dowdy closed the game going 1.2 innings with one strikeout.

The split moves the Trojans to 18-21 overall and puts their conference record at 12-10 which is good enough for seventh place in the state. The Bobcats move to 27-11 overall and 14-8 in conference which puts them in fifth place in the state race. The top eight teams will advance to the first round of the state playoffs May 1st and 2nd.

The Trojans have three conference dates remaining. Their next scheduled game is Wednesday against Northeast Community College (5-17 in conference). Then they face No.1-ranked Hinds (16-4) on April 25th and No.3-ranked East Mississippi (15-5) on April 27th.
