Baseball Trojans sweep Southwest Tennessee with clutch performances

MEMPHIS – Mississippi Delta (6-0) took two from the Southwest Tennessee CC Saluqis on the baseball diamond Thursday with both ending in 2-1 scores.

The Trojans struck first in game one, scoring in the top of the first inning and again in the third on a groundout by Austin Burdine.

Southwest Tennessee would get one to cross the plate in the bottom of the fourth on a Trojan error.

Pitcher Lee Quates, a sophomore from Carthage, would shut the Saluqis down and in his six innings of work allowing only five hits, two walks recording four strikeouts, which is his season high. He would get the win and improve to 2-0 on the year.

In game two, the Trojans would look to its bats to get the win and thanks to freshmen Payton Lane Nathan Pilutti’s late game clutch hitting, the Trojans would score enough runs to claim a victory.

Pilutti would leg out a double in the top of the six setting the stage for Lane’s two-run homer to plate the pair. Lane went 1-for-2 with one homerun and two RBI during game two.

MDCC’s D.J. Stewart would give up only two hits on the mound to the Saluqis during his 3 2/3 innings of work. He got the win, which is his first of the season.

Southwest TN would score one run in the fourth inning, but could not get enough momentum to rally a comeback.

The Trojans host their first home game today, Saturday, Feb. 20 against Southeastern Iowa CC with doubleheader action starting at noon.
