Trojans win, tie with Blue Storm

MOORHEAD – Mississippi Delta (12-3-1) hosted Southwestern Illinois College (7-4-1) on the baseball diamond Saturday in what would end as an interesting doubleheader.

The Trojans would beat the Blue Storm 9-0 in game one. Playing small ball and precision would play a large roll in scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone for the game.

Redshirt freshman Austin Ashley would reach on a leadoff single then advance to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Clay LaBeff and Nathan Pilutti, which would bring Jake Hartman to the plate.

Hartman would knock a single up the middle to drive in Ashley and get MDCC on the scoreboard. Wendell Rieves and Ayreon Davis would reach on a single and walk respectfully to load the bases.

Freshman Payton Lane ripped a double to left field to rack up three ribbies and help move the Trojans to a 4-0 lead headed to the top of the third. Head Coach Michael Avalon’s squad would add on to that lead in the bottom of the fourth.

With two outs and no runners on base, Weber Herbison would reach on a walk then advance to second on a hit-by-pitch to Ashley. Both would advance to the next bag on a single to LaBeff, which brought Pilutti to plate with the bases jammed and two outs.

With a 1-1 count, Pilutti hit a tape-measure blast over the left center wall for a grand slam that put the game at 8-0 in the Trojans favor.

MDCC would one more run in the bottom of the six inning to take the 9-0 lead and the victory. Both games were seven innings long.

Peyton White got the start on the mound for the Trojans and went five innings and gave up two hits, two walks, no runs and tallied four strikeouts. Kenny Hinton and Skyler Lawson would each see one inning of relief work today. White improves to 3-0 on the season.

Game two would play out a little differently for both teams. The Blue Storm would strike first in the top of the third by scoring three runs on four hits and a walk. They would add to that lead in the top of the fifth when freshman Ray Adams hit a two-run homer to make it 5-0.

But MDCC would answer in the bottom of the sixth by scoring a pair of runs off a string of hits and a hit-by-pitch to make it a 5-2 ballgame.

In the bottom of the seventh, Pilutti would find a hole in left field to reach on a single and Hartman would follow him on the base path by reaching on a SWIC error. Rieves would smash a long ball over left center field near the scoreboard to tie the game 5-5 to send it to extra innings.

Both teams would struggle to score in the eight and ninth innings. The umpires were forced to call the ballgame after playing nine due to no field lighting and the sun was setting making it hard to play.

Tyler Dowdy started on the mound for MDCC and went 2 2/3 innings giving up six hits, three runs (all earned) and one walk. Tyler Milligan came in and pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief giving up three hits, two runs and recording two strikeouts.

The bullpen was very active in game two, sending Cole Henson and D.J. Stewart in to help their teammates out. Henson threw one inning giving up two hits. Stewart hurled two innings giving up two hits, one walk and earning one strikeout.

The Trojans will play host to Arkansas Baptist on Wednesday, March 9 at 1 p.m.
