Mississippi Delta Community College student Hannah Leflore was recognized as the Higher Education Awareness Day Working toward Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) student of the year for 2015.

Sponsored by the Mississippi legislature, the award honors academically talented students and faculty members of Mississippi’s higher education institutions who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence.

A Greenwood native, Leflore is a sophomore at MDCC and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, a member of the Ambassadors, co-editor of the yearbook and a member of the Baptist Student Union. She is the daughter of Stan and Jan Leflore.

After graduating from MDCC, Leflore plans to attend Delta State University and major in Speech and Hearing Sciences.

Leflore is among the state’s honorees invited to the Mississippi Capitol for Higher Education Appreciation Day. The goal of Appreciation Day is to encourage excellence among those involved in higher education as a way to further leadership, increase knowledge across the broad spectrum of education, and promote good citizens capable of thriving in today’s society and prepared to meet future challenges. To this end, one student and faculty honoree are annually selected from each of the 36 public and private member institutions of the Mississippi Association of Colleges to participate in the Appreciation Day activities.
