Defense led by Grayer and Stanley not enough to fend off Lions

SCOOBA – The Trojan defense racked up 38 tackles (unofficial stats) on the night, but it was not enough to push past the Lions of East Mississippi Community College as MDCC lost 73-7 Thursday night to move to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in division play.

MDCC won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The opening possession for the Lions was a six-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yard touch down run by Isaiah Wright for EMCC to take a swift 7-0 lead with 13:26 left in the first quarter.

Freshmen quarterback Guy Myers would get his first career start under center Thursday night for the Trojans. His opening drive at the helm resulted in a Trojan punt after a run for a 1-yard loss and two incomplete passes.

Myers in combination with sophomore Ja’Bril Haymon, would be a key duo for MDCC’s offense. Haymon carried the ball seven times for 34 yards, had a 30-yard kickoff return and scored the lone touch down in the game for the Trojans.

Freshmen Terrance Grayer (three tackles, three assists, one play broken up) and Jalen Stanley (two tackles, two assists, two plays broken up) led the defense for the Trojans. Bennie Higgins also had a notable night with one tackle, three assists and one sack.

MDCC plays host to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Jim Randall Stadium in Moorhead.
