HEADWAE winners announced

Mississippi Delta Community College instructor Andy Forte and student Coleby Logan Hutchinson were recently recognized as the Higher Education Awareness Day Working toward Academic Excellence (HEADWAE) Instructor of the Year and Student of the Year for 2016.

Sponsored by the Mississippi legislature, the award honors academically talented students and faculty members of Mississippi’s higher education institutions who have made outstanding contributions in promoting academic excellence.

Forte has taught Biology at MDCC for 15 years. He earned his bachelor’s in Zoology from the University of Mississippi and his master’s degree in Natural Science from Delta State University.

Forte is involved with the MDCC Alumni Association, MDCC Faculty Association, Mississippi Faculty Association for Community and Junior Colleges, University of Mississippi Alumni Association, Delta State Alumni Association and was named a Lamplighter for MDCC in 2013.

A Boyle native, Hutchinson is a sophomore at MDCC and is Vice President of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, member of Delta Delegates, Youth Leader at Cleveland Church of God where he is also a sound technician. He is the son of Chipper and Stephanie Hutchinson.

After graduating from MDCC, Hutchinson plans to attend Mississippi State University to further his education in electrical engineering.

Forte and Hutchinson are among the state’s honorees invited to the Mississippi Capitol for Higher Education Appreciation Day.

The goal of Appreciation Day is to encourage excellence among those involved in higher education as a way to further leadership, increase knowledge across the broad spectrum of education, and promote good citizens capable of thriving in today’s society and prepared to meet future challenges.
