Grinstead named new MDCC softball skipper

Brad GrinsteadMississippi Delta Community College welcomes Brad Grinstead as its new head softball coach. Grinstead was approved by the MDCC Board of Trustees during its August 10 meeting.

He has been the assistant softball coach at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas since 2014. Under his leadership, the program set single season win records during the 2015 and 2016 campaigns. Lyon is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). During the 2015 season, the team finished second in the American Midwest Conference.

From 2010 to 2013, Grinstead was the assistant softball coach at Hendrix College, which is a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III school in Conway, Arkansas.

At Lyon and Hendrix, he was responsible for developing daily practice schedules and game plans along with recruiting and implementing strength and conditioning workouts.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the program,” says Grinstead. I’m looking forward to our first game and bringing a championship program to Mississippi Delta.”

Grinstead is a Colorado native and graduated from Moffat County High School in Craig, Colorado. He played college baseball at Hendrix College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2011.

“It’s great to have Brad here as the new head softball coach,” says Athletic Director Jeff Tatum. He has hit the ground running from day one, and we’re excited to add him to the athletic department.”

Grinstead replaces former head coach Chris Watford who accepted the head softball coaching position at Washington School.

Lady Trojans Fall To Holmes CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans dropped a pair of North Division games to Holmes Community College Friday at Moorhead losing the first game 12-2 and the second game 18-0.

The Lady Bulldogs scored seven runs on six hits in the first inning of game one. The Lady Trojan s answered with a single run in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Janesha Nickerson.

Holmes added a run in the second inning and four runs in the sixth while Mississippi Delta scored their second run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Nickerson. The Lady Bulldogs’ 12 runs came on 12 hits with six runners left on base. Delta’s two runs came on three hits with three runners left stranded. Megan Prentiss and Miranda Kelly also got hits for the Lady Trojans.

In game two the Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the first inning and one run in the second before exploding for 15 runs off 12 hits in the third inning. They added a lone run in the fifth.

Holmes had 18 runs on 19 hits and stranded eight runners on base. The Lady Trojans had two hits in the game.

The loss drops Mississippi Delta to 0-20 for the season and leaves their North Division record at 0-8.

Lady Trojans Fall To East Miss

The Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans dropped a pair of North Division games to East Mississippi Community College Wednesday losing the first game 15-3 and the second game 6-4.

The Lady Trojans held a 2-1 lead after the first inning but then gave up two runs in the second and one in the third before the Lady Lions blew the game open with an 11 run fourth. MDCC got their third run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

East Mississippi’s 15 runs came off 16 hits while leaving seven runners stranded on base. Mississippi Delta’s three runs came off four hits and they left three runners on base. Emily Cox and Taylor Seiler led the Lady Trojans at the plate with RBI doubles while Amber Adams and Lakin Ables produced a single each.

The Lady Lions opened game two with a four run first inning but then the Lady Trojans held them for four scoreless innings before giving up two additional runs in the sixth. The Lady Trojans finally got on the board with a three hit, four -run fourth but came up two runs short of going into extra innings.

Tori Blackburn was perfect at the plate going 3-3 (all singles) while Taylor Seiler had a single and a three run homerun to her credit. Megan Prentiss had a single and an RBI double while Emily Cox had two singles and Amber Adams added a single.

The Lady Trojans scored four runs on nine hits and left eight runners on base while the Lady Lions scored six runs on 12 hits and left six runners stranded.

The losses leave the Lady Trojans’ overall record at 0-18 and their North Division record at 0-6. Their next scheduled game is Friday at Holmes Community College in Goodman. Game one begins at 1 p.m.

Lady Trojans Fall To Northeast CC

The Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans opened North Division play by hosting the Lady Tigers of Northeast Community College Wednesday. MDCC lost game one 10-2 and game two 13-0.

In game one Northeast scored one runs each in the first and second innings and three runs each in the third and fourth innings before adding a final run in the fifth. Mississippi Delta scored one run in the fourth, on a ground out by Sheana Witt and in the fifth on an RBI double by Emily Cox.

Northeast had 10 runs on six hits and left six runners stranded on base. The Lady Trojans had two runs on four hits and left five runners stranded. Delta’s Megan Prentiss, Tori Blackburn, and Amber Adams all hit singles in the game.

Game two saw the Lady Tigers explode for five runs in the first inning and five runs in the fourth. They added a single run in the second and two additional runs in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Lady Trojans could manage just two hits in the game, singles by Emily Cox and Taylor Seiler.

Northeast’s 13 runs came off 11 hits and the Lady Tigers left seven runs stranded on base. The Lady Trojans had no runs off two hits and left just one runner on base.

The losses drop the Lady Trojans to 0-14 for the season. They will be at home again on Friday as they play host to the Itawamba Lady Indians at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.

The Lady Trojans softball game against Northeast today has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 5, at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.

Lady Trojans Fall To Jones Junior College

The Mississippi Delta Community College Lady Trojans hosted the Jones Junior College Lady Bobcats Tuesday at Moorhead and were defeated 20-1 in game one and 23-0 in game two.

The Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first inning of game one off of 10 hits. They added five runs off three hits in the second, one run off three hits in the third, and one run off three hits in the fifth. That’s 20 runs off 21 hits in the game with 10 runners left on base.

The Lady Trojans’ lone run came in the fourth when the Jones pitcher was called for a balk with an MDCC runner in scoring position. MDCC had two hits and left one runner stranded. The hits, both singles, came off the bats of Emily Cox and Megan Prentiss.

In game two, Jones scored six runs in the first inning off five hits, seven runs in the second inning off seven hits, four runs in the third inning off six hits, and three runs in the fourth off five hits and three runs in the fifth off six hits. That’s 23 runs off 29 hits with 11 runners left on base.

The Lady Trojans were only able to again manage two hits, a Taylor Seiler single in the second and a Janesha Nickerson single in the fourth. They also left three runners on the bases.
