Thomas Cole of Sunflower, Miss., was selected by his co-workers as Mississippi Delta Community College’s Staff Member of the Month for September. Thomas serves MDCC as a maintenance technician and groundskeeper on the main campus in Moorhead, Miss.

“The most enjoyable part of my job at MDCC is staying busy and working with great people,” says Cole. An MDCC employee for 11 years, his daily responsibilities include maintaining a clean, neat and well- kept campus area.

The MDCC Development Foundation, Inc. and Sodexo (MDCC Cafeteria) sponsor the Staff Employee of the Month Award. The staff appreciation committee is comprised of staff members representing different areas of the college. This committee randomly selects a department each month, and the employees working in that department select the award recipient. Students and staff at MDCC are likely to know at least one of the Cole brothers as there are four of them working for the Maintenance Department. Together, Eddie, Otis, Onex, and Thomas Cole have contributed over 33 years of service to the College.

Thomas Cole, having served MDCC for nine years, can often be seen riding around in the truck picking up the trash from different buildings. He's known for his large straw hat and for always honking to say hello. Thomas resides in Sunflower and has four children.

Onex Cole was the first of the Cole family to join the MDCC family. For the past eleven years, he has served in various positions including Assistant Mechanic and currently works in Shipping and Receiving. He and his wife Lutrissa Cole reside in Indianola and have two children. "I plan on retiring in December," said Onex. "I really enjoy working at MDCC," he said, "the people are great - it's one big family." When asked about his plans following retirement, Onex commented, "I don't hunt or fish, but I like doing body and mechanic work - maybe I'll pick that back up."

Eddie Cole has worked for three years as Custodian in the J.T. Hall Coliseum. He has two children and resides in Sunflower. Otis Cole has worked in a couple different positions during his ten year tenure, and most currently works on the grounds. Otis has four children and resides in Indianola. "It's a real pleasure working here at MDCC with a lot of great people," said Otis. "I plan to retire in December but don't have any plans as of now."

Rick Davis, Director of Maintenance, spoke very highly of all of the Cole brothers. "I don't know what I'm going to do when Otis and Onex retire," said Davis. "I'm going to need four people to replace just the two of them."
