MDCC offers new music degree

Entertainment Industry Studies is a new major Mississippi Delta Community College will offer students this fall. The Entertainment Industries Studies major is essentially a Music Business associates degree. Upon passing the curriculum required, students can earn an Associate of Arts degree in the field.

Three area universities that offer a bachelor’s degree in Entertainment Industry Studies are Delta State University, University of Southern Mississippi and The University of Memphis.

Potential careers with this major are electronic production and design, audio engineering, music directing, programming, recoding engineer, event production, media development and so much more.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, careers in this field can earn an average yearly salary of approximately $42,550.

Aside from core curriculum, students will be required to take some business courses and basic computer skills for musicians, computer recording I and II, audio engineering I and II and survey of popular music.

“Students interested in this degree can begin coursework in this fall semester,” says Jennifer P. Woodard, Fine Arts Division Chair and instructor.

“The Fine Arts Department is so excited about this degree. We have so much to offer students in terms of electives to enhance the program.”
