Men win nail-biter against Southwest

Keeping the crowd on the edge of their seats, MDCC men’s basketball escaped Summit with a close 56-53 win Monday night against the Southwest Bears.

The Bears took an early 4-0 lead in the first half, but the Trojans quickly responded by going up 17-7 with just under 12 minutes left to play until halftime.

MDCC finished the first half leading the Bears 36-22 with Travon Harper leading the team with 22 points scored.

The Bears started the second half with a more aggressive tempo. SMCC went on a 15-5 scoring spree with 13 minutes left in the game to cut MDCC’s lead to 48-42.

However, it would not be enough. The Trojans defeated the Bears 56-53 to improve to 3-0 on the season. SMCC falls to 2-1.

For the Trojans, Harper made 9 of 14 from the field and was 6 of 7 in free throws and led the team in scoring for the night with 24 total points. He also racked up nine rebounds.

Anthony Mabon was second on the team in scoring with nine points making 2 of 5 from the field and 4 of 7 from the stripe. He was also 100 percent from beyond the arc and tallied five assists.

In the women’s contest, the Lady Trojans (0-3) fell to the Lady Bears (2-0) 89-45.

At the half, SMCC took a 16-point lead to the locker room and continued to add to it after the break.

The Lady Trojans were led in scoring by O’Nesha Arnold who had 11 points. She was 3 of 8 from the field and 5 of 6 in free throws. Arnold also led the team in rebounds with five.
