MDCC hoops split in pre-holiday tournament

Both Mississippi Delta basketball teams participated in a tournament at Northwest Mississippi CC in Senatobia, Miss. Thursday afternoon and brought home a loss and a win respectfully.

The Lady Trojans (1-5) started off strong against the Lady Cougars of Lawson State CC with sophomore guard McKinnon Skeen sinking a three.

MDCC would carry the lead throughout the entire first period of play. A strong drive to the basket by sophomore guard Racquel Harper would put the lead to 11, which was the longest in the opening period.

Up 22-11, MDCC would start strong in the second period, but would have to defend against Lawson State’s fast breaks and post players doing work underneath.

Coach Bernadette McDonald’s squad went to the locker room at the half with a 38-26 lead. Harper led the team during the first half with 12 points making 3 of 4 from the field and being perfect from beyond the arc and from the stripe.

The Lady Cougars would speed things up in the second half and come back to take the lead 50-48 with 7:35 left to play in the final period. Behind by one and facing the final minute of play, the Lady Trojans took advantage of a trip to the free throw line to tie it up at 59, but wouldn’t be able to hang on.

Lawson State would over power MDCC and go on to win 63-59. O’Nesha Hunt and Harper led the team in scoring with 15 and 13 points respectfully. Hunt was 7 of 10 from the field with two rebounds.

The men’s team played Faith Prep from Marion, Ark. directly after the women’s game Thursday afternoon.

The Trojans (5-1) got on the board first, but Faith Prep answered by driving down the court and got the layup to fall to tie it 2-2 at the start of the game.

With 11:02 left in the first half of play, MDCC would go up 21-9 and never look back. It would go to the break leading 41-32.
