MDCC hoops split with Baton Rouge

The Lady Trojans watched their record fall to 1-7 after a loss to the Lady Bears of Baton Rouge CC Thursday night at J.T. Hall Coliseum.

BRCC scored first within the opening minute of play with a short jumper for two by freshman guard Rhomyia Tate.

The first period was a back-and-forth scoring match between the squads, but halfway through the period MDCC sophomore guard McKinnon Skeen drilled a three to put her team up 8-5, which was its first lead of the night.

The Lady Trojans took advantage of a trip to the stripe just before the end of the first period to tie it at 17. They would take a 36-33 lead into the locker room at the half, but struggled in the second half of play.

With just under seven minutes left in the third period, MDCC gave up the lead and never regained it. The fell to the Lady Bears by a score of 74-58

Freshman forward O’Nesha Hunt and sophomore guard Racquel Harper led the team in scoring with 21 and 15 points respectfully.

Freshman guard Cora Cooley led the team in rebounds with five.

Head Coach Derrick Fears and his men’s team (8-1) battled with a short lead against the Bears of Baton Rouge CC in the first half of the game, but started to pull away after the break to end the night with a 78-62 victory.

They took a 21-point lead, which was the longest of the night, late in the second half. On the night, the team tallied a total of 78 points making 46.7 percent (26 of 60) from the field and 55.6 percent (15 of 27) free throws.

Sophomores Jaylen Ford, Travon Harper and Dantaveous Crawford led the team in scoring with 16, 15 and 13 points respectfully.

Harper also led the team in rebounds with nine.

Both teams will travel to Northeast Mississippi CC in Boonville on Monday, Dec. 7 to open division play at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
