Trojans take down Tigers 90-73 in rivalry game

Mississippi Delta battled against the Tigers of Coahoma Community College Monday in an anticipated rivalry match-up at J.T. Hall Coliseum.

CCC took the lead for the first 4:19 of the game before the Trojans took control and ran away with the contest.

In the first half, MDCC would steadily add to their lead by staying poised and not giving up turnovers.

MDCC would out score CCC by 23 points and go to the break with a 48-25 lead. The Trojans would go up 66-35, which was the biggest lead they had in the contest, with 13:13 left to play in the ballgame.

The Trojans wore the Tigers down by utilizing their size under the basket and constantly challenging their post players.

Head Coach Derrick Fears’ squad would add a win to its record with a final score of 90-73.

On the game, MDCC shot 51 percent from the field, 24 percent from beyond the arc and 82 percent from the charity stripe. The Trojans were perfect from the free throw line in the first half sinking 6-of-6.

Sophomore centers Michael Sission and Xavier Appleberry along with freshman point guard Queshod Young were big factors on the night with all three scoring 15 points for the Trojans.

Sission’s other stats tallied eight rebounds with two assists. Young had three rebounds with six assists while Appleberry brought down nine rebounds on the night.

Other scorers were freshman forward James Jones and sophomore guard Jabarie Escoffery with 14 and 12 points respectfully.

The win improves the Trojans record to 8-9 (3-3) on the season. 

The Trojans travel to Goodman Monday night to face Holmes Community College with tipoff slated for 8 p.m.
